The Most Underrated Movies

by Dylan - first posted April 19, 2011

Well it was late on a Wednesday night and I decided to watch a movie. Going through my extensive collection for the first time in ages I started to notice some movies that I haven’t watched in years, but were truly brilliant and underrated movies! This list is in alphabetical order, but it seems that after compiling my list the majority of the most underrated movies were in the lower end of the alphabet! Weird.

15 Most Underrated Movies of the Last 2 Decades

8 Mile

8 Mile is about a a young white rapper (Eminem) growing up in the slums of Detroit as he struggles for respect among his (mostly black) peers. The film was actually well received and had good box office success.

Why It’s Underrated: Everyone seems to have forgotten this great movie, and more importantly Eminem’s amazing acting talent.

A Bug’s Life

This is one of Pixar’s early success’, released in 1998. A Bugs Life is about an ant who stands up and questions his conformist role in the colony.

Why It’s Underrated: 1998! The animation still holds up to todays standards, and that’s impressive on its own. Artistic value aside, the film portrayed a great message and had beautiful story and character development. Plus, Kevin Spacey as an evil grasshopper? Awesome.

Across The Universe

Across The Universe is a modern musical all done to the music of The Beatles and set in the Vietnam War era. It’s about a boy named Jude who travels to America to find his long lost father. He ends up making some great friends and decides to stay in America.

Why It’s Underrated: The music! One of the best scores of all time (with help from The Beatles). The film’s setting was perfect and the message of freedom and anti war was spot on.

Austin Powers

Mike Myers at his best. A 1960s hipster secret agent is brought out of cryofreeze to oppose his greatest enemy in the 1990s, Dr. Evil.

Why It’s Underrated: I really don’t know how to answer this. The Austin Power movies were great movies that started way too many quotes to count, but was sadly forgotten over time.

Blow

The story of George Jung (Johnny Depp), the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970s.

Why It’s Underrated: I debated even putting this movie on here. To those who are Depp fans, this movie is definitely well known and loved. Blow has a large cult following as well, but I feel it deserved a spot on the list because as loved as it is by it’s fans, it deserves more!

The Butterfly Effect

As a young boy, Even (Kutcher) blacked out any traumatic experience. Now a psychology student, he has found a way to relive experiences blacked out, and change them.

Why It’s Underrated: One of the only movies with Ashton Kutcher that I’ve seen him play a serious role in, and it was good! I think this movie got so much undeserving hate because it’s one of the rare movies that messes with your mind. I guess people don’t want to think anymore.

Catch Me If You Can

A true story about Frank Abagnale Jr. who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor.

Why It’s Underrated: Repeat: A true story about Frank Abagnale Jr. who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks as a Pan Am pilot, doctor, and legal prosecutor. But seriously, I’m not a DiCaprio or Hanks fan by any means, but they were both brilliant in this film.

Click

A workaholic architect finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.

Why It’s Underrated: My theory is that people saw Adam Sandler in a movie about a universal remote that remote controls the universe, and thought to themselves “this is stupid“. However after viewing Click, I felt it was more of a modern day It’s A Wonderful Life – but even better! This one actually had me in tears by the end.

Definitely, Maybe

A political consultant tries to explain his impending divorce and past relationships to his 11-year-old daughter.

Why It’s Underrated: I’m a guy, and I loved this movie. Overall considered a chick flick or a romance comedy, Definitely, Maybe is definitely watchable with Ryan Reynolds’ witty humor and 3 gorgeous girls.

The Girl Next Door

A teenager’s dreams come true when a former porn star moves in next door and they fall in love

Why It’s Underrated: Funny and witty, I love it. Timothy Olyphant as Kelly was awesome, and the story is a lot more deepthan “boy falls in love with porn star”. I would even say that this film is a beautiful portrayal of moral fiber and knowing if the juice is worth the squeeze.

Jumper

A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “Jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them.

Why It’s Underrated: I think I just loved the idea of the freedom one has when able to teleport to anywhere in the world. Hayden Christensen wasn’t actually that bad in the film, and god I love Rachel Bilson.

Queen Of The Damned

The vampire Lestat becomes a rock star whose music wakes up the queen of all vampires.

Why It’s Underrated: Loosely based off the novel series started by Interview With The Vampire, but focusing more on music. This movie got a bad wrap from all the fans of the novel series, but thats OK. The movie is great on its own, plus it was wicked music.

Requiem for a Dream

The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island individuals are shattered when their addictions become stronger.

Why It’s Underrated: Not too long ago I saw Jared Leto with nothing but an acoustic guitar, and was blown away by complete talent. I then found out he was an actor too, so decided to watch this film. Damn! I went in as a Leto fan, left as an Ellen Burstyn fan. Someone give that woman an award!

Romeo Must Die

An avenging cop seeks out his brother’s killer and falls for the daughter of a businessman who is involved in a money-deal with his father.

Why It’s Underrated:This is just a great movie about family honor that happens to also have one of the greatest martial artists in it. Jet Li is awesome, and so was Aaliyah.

Surf’s Up

A behind-the-scenes look at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship, and its newest participant, up-and-comer Cody Maverick.

Why It’s Underrated: I could probably ask any one of friends if they’ve ever seen this movie and they would reply “nope”, and that’s a shame! This movie didn’t change my life or the way I think, but it was a great, fun, cute film about surfing penguins!

So, now that’s out of the way, did I miss anything? Disagree with any of my choices? Leave a comment!
